Southern Pan Fried Okra

I'll show how to fry fresh okra without using buttermilk, just cornmeal and water. Simple, easy way of doing fried okra. One of my family's favorites.

Ingredients

• Fresh whole okra (or frozen)
• ½ cup water
• 1 cup corn meal
• 1 teaspoon of salt
• 1 teaspoon of salt
• 1 cup frying oil (Peanut, Corn, Canola)

Directions

1. Season corn meal with salt and pepper.
2. Rinse off okra, cut off the ends, and slice the okra ½ - ⅝ inch thick.
3. Add water to bowl of sliced okra and mix.
4. Sprinkle corn meal over okra and mix coating okra.
5. Add oil to skillet over medium-high heat. Not too hot so not to burn okra.
6. After oil comes to temperature (370-375°F), carefully add okra in batches.
7. Fry each batch 3-4 minutes until golden brown turning okra 2-3 times during each batch cooking time.
8. Remove okra from skillet with a large spoon with holes or a strainer skimmer.
9. Place okra on a paper towel-lined cookie sheet to absorb the excess oil.
10. Serve with your favorite vegetables.
