Apple Pie Recipe

Americans love apple pie. Apple pie is associated often with home-cooked meals, holidays gatherings, and great memories. Let Aunt Sandy's Kitchen help you make a semi-homemade apple pie with just the right mix of fresh sweet and tart apples, warm spices, and sugar for your next gathering. Oh, don't forget the vanilla ice cream on top.

Ingredients

• 1 box refrigerated Pillsbury™ Pie Crusts OR 1 package frozen Pillsbury™ Deep Dish Pie Crusts (2 Count) - thaw, fill one pie crust with apple mixture, and use the 2nd pie crust to shape and cover the filling as the top pie crust.
• 3 pounds (7 cups) apples peeled, cored, and thinly sliced (¼” thick)
• 1 tablespoon lemon juice
• ½ cup sugar
• ½ cup light brown sugar, firmly packed
• 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
• 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
• ⅛ teaspoon ground nutmeg
• ¼ teaspoon salt
• 1½ tablespoons butter cut into pieces



Egg Wash Topping Ingredients (optional)

• 1 egg
• 1 teaspoon of water
• 1 tablespoon sugar

Directions

1. Heat oven to 425°F (220°C).
2. Lined baking sheet with foil and set aside.
3. Spray 9-inch glass pie plates with cooking spray.
4. Place 1 pie crust in pie plate. Press pie crust firmly against side and bottom.
5. In large mixing bowl, add apples and lemon juice.
6. In small mixing bowl, whisk together sugars, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Pour mixture over apples and toss together until apples are thoroughly coated with the mixture.
7. Spoon mixture into crust-lined pie plate. Place pieces of butter evenly over the apples.
8. Top with second crust. Wrap excess top crust under the bottom crust edge.
9. Crimp the edges together to seal, and cut slits in the top crust to vent steam while baking.
10. Use a pastry brush to brush over the top crust with egg wash. Then, sprinkle with 1 tablespoon of sugar.
11. Bake at 425°F (220°C) for 15 minutes.
12. Cover edge of crust with pie crust shield or 2 - 3 -inch wide strips of foil to prevent excessive browning.
13. Reduce oven temperature to 350°F (175°C) and continue baking for 45 to 55 minutes until apples are tender and crust is golden.
14. Allow to cool on cooling rack for several hours before cutting slices.
15. Serve warm topped with ice cream or Aunt Sandy's homemade whipped topping.
